There is no easy answer to that question. Each door and situation is different and should be judged appropriately. We have a hierarchy of locks which we use to decide.
It is as follows:
1. Strikes are the first choice since they can be wired with the reader and contact causing less invasion of the walls or conduit.
2. Electrified lock hardware is second, but does require modification of the door.
3. Electrified trim is third because it usually costs more that electrified hardware and has to be special ordered for most locks.
4. Lastly, although not with most of the competition is the Mag lock. It’s arguably the easiest to install, but the least safe. It can lock people in if not properly installed and sometimes even then. It also requires extra safety devices that make them more expensive.
